Wall Hung Basins FAQ
What is a wall hung basin?
Wall hung basins are wash hand basins which are mounted directly to the wall and do not have a bathroom vanity beneath them, opposed to other wash hand basins, such as full pedestal basins which extend to ground level, concealing pipework and inset basins, which are installed into the deck of a vanity unit.
What are the benefits of wall hung basins?
There are lots of benefits of wall hung basins, including:
-
You can fix them to the wall at any height - wall hung basins are much more flexible than some other basins as you can fix them to the wall at any height depending on your individual preference and what they will be used for.
-
They save space - if your bathroom or commercial washroom is compact, wall hung basins are a great option as they do not take up as much space. They are particularly popular in smaller areas such as cloakrooms and ensuites and make the job of plumbing that extra bit easier as there is more space available to conduct work.
-
They are easy to clean - As wall hung basins are compact, it’s much easier to clean them as you don’t have to worry about a vanity below or cleaning the floor space around a typical full pedestal basin. Furthermore, as wall hung basins do not take up floor space, you are able to see any water spills or leaks that may otherwise go unnoticed and could cause damage to vanity units.
-
They are stylish - wall hung basins are more modern and will fit perfectly in a contemporary bathroom. The fact that it does not have a vanity beneath it can also help make a room less ‘messy’ as there aren’t as many fixtures and fittings involved.
-
They don’t hide as much tiling - As wall hung basins do not take up as much space, you can show off more of your tiling/wall!
Do wall hung basins have a pedestal?
Whilst many wall hung basins do not feature a pedestal, you can get wall hung basins with a semi pedestal - these are more space-efficient than full pedestals and can conceal pipework.
How to install wall hung basin
Firstly, you will need to ensure that you have a suitable, solid wall for a wall hung basin as it will need to support the weight of the basin. If your wall hung basin is made of ceramic, you will need to make sure that it isn’t too heavy or big for the wall of your choice.
Usually, fixings will be included with the basin and there will be wall hangings to support the wall hung basin’s weight. These hangings will need to be screwed into the wall with both a wall plate and a waste bracket so that the waste pipes are fully supported.
It is advised that you get a qualified and experienced plumber to install your wall hung basin for you.
How high should a wall hung basin be?
How high your wall hung basin should be will depend on individual preference and who the basin is designed for. Whilst the approximate height of a wall hung basin is between 800-850mm, you may wish to install your basin higher or lower depending on your height, for example, your basin will need to be mounted lower in schools with young pupils.
Can any sink be wall mounted?
Wall hung basins are ideal for compact bathrooms and smaller washrooms as they save space and are easier to clean and maintain. That said, not all sinks are able to be wall mounted as they may be too heavy or too big for a particular wall.
