Thanet Earth Washroom Refurbishment Case Study

Thanet Earth is one of Britain’s largest glasshouse complexes, a facility responsible for growing a vast range of produce for the UK. We were brought in to complete a refurbishment project at the site in East Kent, where the washrooms within a central office building were being upgraded.
This washroom refurbishment was part of a much broader building renovation project, and required us to adhere to existing timeframes and meticulously plan deliveries and installation work. Working closely with the main contractor, we helped plan layout drawings and iron out the finer details of the cubicles and toilet requirements.
The project included the male and female washrooms and an Accessible Washroom. The rooms had a new ceiling installed and fresh flooring. The remit was to deliver a clean and sophisticated room, and the client chose cubicle panels with a birch ply finish, which gave the room a warm Scandinavian feel.
The cubicles were installed alongside an integrated plumbing system (IPS). This was done via a DUCT set, a framework fitted to create a false wall and service void. Within this DUCT set, all the cisterns, mains feed pipework, and waste pipes are concealed behind panels made from High-Pressure Laminate (HPL), which also carries the faux birch ply finish. This meant we could then fit Armitage Shanks Back-To-Wall Toilets, which give a clean, minimalistic finish.

The Toilet Cubicles surrounding the toilets were also made from HPL and fitted in a specific way to have a flush-fronted finish. This process involves fitting the pilaster to enable a rebate against which the door panels can sit. The result makes a strong impact in office and general commercial environments.
Over at the hand wash area, we provided Solid-Surface Wash Troughs mounted on solid-grade laminate (SGL) under frames. This material is essential in washroom settings as it’s highly durable and completely impervious to water. That means it will never swell or weaken from ingress water.
Armitage Shanks Sensor Taps were partnered with these wash troughs, which deliver a warm water flow by blending the hot and cold feeds. They also emit water for a set period when hands are placed beneath them, which helps reduce the risk of flooding and reduces water consumption across the site. Sensor activation also significantly improves hygiene in a wash space as touch points are reduced while simultaneously improving the room's usability.
As this project was part of a wider refurbishment, we collated and delivered the cisterns and taps and first fix plumbing materials first. Later, the second delivery contained all the cubicles and IPS panels. This was a large consignment that needed to be stored indoors before fitting and would take up quite a lot of room, so the main contractor greatly appreciated the ability to manage logistics effectively.
Completed on budget and on time in 2025, this work at Thanet Earth is an example of how durable materials can be used in modern applications. It is a way to deliver smart aesthetics combined with easy, clean functionality.
