Ulwell Holiday Park (Dorset) Toilet Block Refurbishment | Case Study

Ulwell Holiday Park Toilet Block Refurbishments

The Customer

On the south coast of Dorset, Ulwell Holiday Park has been a popular destination for some time. After many years of use, the washing and shower facilities at Ulwell needed modernisation, particularly the showers, which were not running efficiently anymore.

Commercial Washrooms provided a full specification and Washroom Design Service for this client, liaising with them directly to ascertain exactly what was required in this refurbishment and highlighting potential issues that could arise.

After organising a full specification of works, including materials, fittings, and labour costs, alongside detailed CAD drawings, the Ulwell Holiday Park management could decide based on full transparency and clarity of what would be delivered.

They commissioned our full washroom refurbishment service to be completed.

Before the Refurbishment

This work was carried out in early 2025 during the winter months when the Holiday Park was closed and out of season.

After systematically removing all the existing washing facilities, we began implementing the new suites for a Male and Female Washroom and Shower Rooms, an Accessible Washroom and Shower room, and two Baby Changing Rooms.

All wall surfaces in these rooms were clad in Altro Whiterock, a material renowned for its robust hygiene, fire retardant qualities, and incredibly easy to clean. A new suspended ceiling was also installed in these rooms, which housed a brand-new air extraction system carefully measured and configured for the washrooms' steam and moisture requirements.

These new ceilings also housed a new PIR lighting system, which involved an infrared sensor activation for efficient, low-energy LED lighting. This would mean the lights in the washroom would only be on when a user was in the room.

With the old showers removed and deciding to move away from a tiled floor to a safe, non-slip vinyl floor covering, we reworked the floor and dug in new Aco Drains for Vinyl Floors to remove waste shower water. Altro Aquarius flooring was then laid, carrying an anti-slip property that works in dry and wet conditions.

As planned, the floor height changed after these upgrades, so we installed brand-new door frames and entry doors to these rooms to deliver a seamless and uplifted finish.

Following this, new Standard-Height Toilet Cubicles, constructed from solid-grade laminate (SGL), were fitted throughout. This material is highly durable and completely impervious to water, so it will remain sturdy and decisive even in wet and humid conditions.

Full-height DUCT sets were used behind each toilet to create a false wall with a service void behind. This void would contain all the necessary pipework and cisterns for the toilets, which push-button flushes would control. These DUCT sets were clad in the same highly durable SGL panels used for the cubicles.

In the men's washroom, we also made space for RAK Series 600 concealed trap urinals paired with ceiling DVS Flushmatic Ceiling Mounted Downlighter Urinal PIR Sensors. This meant that when the user stepped back and away from the urinal, it would flush automatically with every use, saving the need for timed urinal flushes.

Solid-grade laminate was also used to build custom underframes for the Solid-Surface Vanity Units with Corian Wash Basins, which had been partnered with RAK-Compact Commercial Non-Concussive Basin Taps. These taps only emit water for a set period, meaning they couldn’t accidentally be left on.

The disabled washroom was fitted with a full Armitage Shanks Close Coupled Doc-M pack, a group of washroom fittings needed to adhere to Document-M of Building Regulations. This pack contains a close-coupled toilet, all the necessary Accessible Grab Rails, and a low-height wash basin with lever controls. This room also included a new shower with a Delabie Sports Shower Panel.

In the baby changing rooms, we fitted Fold Down Baby Changing Units and showers, this time in glass shower enclosures that sat on top of individual shower trays rather than serviced by a floor gulley.

These efficient, easy-to-clean, and hard-wearing washrooms have given Ulwell Holiday Park’s showering facilities a new lease of life. They were completed on time and budget over seven weeks.
