You may have noticed that many disabled washrooms in the UK are left permanently locked, meaning only those with a key can access them. These toilets will have been fitted with a full Doc-M pack, to ensure they have the necessary grab rails, full height toilet and lever operated taps. However, through the National Key Scheme, disabled users are able to gain access to all of them and here’s how.
Why are some disabled toilets locked?
The reason many disabled toilets are locked is two-fold. Firstly, locking them protects expensive disabled toilets from vandalism and misuse. With the facilities being restricted only to those who hold a key, it helps to keep them in tip-top condition for as long as possible. Secondly, when only disabled users can access the toilets, it means they don’t become occupied by users who don’t need the extra facilities. This is particularly important in high traffic environments like shopping malls, train stations and event venues.
What is RADAR?
RADAR stands for the Royal Association for Disability And Rehabilitation and there is a locking mechanism known throughout the industry as a RADAR lock. This lock can be opened by a universal key, meaning that if a disabled user carries a RADAR key, they can access any washroom that has been fitted with this type of lock.
How do I get a RADAR key?
RADAR keys are available to anyone registered with a disability and can be sourced through your local authority. However, spare keys can also be purchased via Commercial Washrooms. Carers, site managers and caretakers can also gain access to RADAR keys so that the facilities can be managed and cleaned regularly.
Where can I find RADAR toilets?
The Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation publishes a National Key Scheme Guide annually, providing a full list of toilets in the UK that have been fitted with a RADAR or NKS lock. This allows you to go out safe in the knowledge of secure and accessible washrooms.
