FAQs
What is a low level toilet?
A low level toilet pan is a type of toilet which has a ceramic cistern fitted at a low level (usually fixed to the wall with brackets) - a style which was inspired by the Victorian era. Low level toilets feature exposed flush pipes which connect the cistern to the toilet pan, whilst they’re often mistaken for close coupled toilets, their exposed flush pipe is what really differentiates the two.
In comparison to high level toilets, they have a shorter flush pipe and are more modern in their appearance.
Do I need a low level toilet?
The type of toilet you opt for is entirely up to you, that said, there are a few things you can consider to help you make your decision:
-
What’s the style of your room? Both high level and low level toilet pans suit traditional bathrooms, with low level toilets being a more modern option. That said, if you’re looking for something more contemporary, close coupled toilets are a popular alternative.
-
Where do you want to install your toilet? A benefit of having a low level toilet pan is that you have more flexibility when it comes to positioning them as the short flush pipe allows you to have space between the cistern and toilet pan.
-
They can be more practical than high level toilets as it’s easier to access their cistern should you need to fix anything.
-
Would you like your pipework to be concealed? If your answer is yes, you should consider a more modern option such as a close coupled toilet which hides pipework. If you’re not concerned about the flush pipe being visible or think it would fit your washroom's aesthetic, a low level toilet pan and cistern would be a perfect option.

How many low level toilet pans do I need?
It’s important to ensure that you have enough toilets in your school or nursery. You should have a minimum of one toilet per ten pupils and one washbasin per toilet. It’s also important for you to ensure that you have an accessible toilet available for any students with disabilities in your school or nursery and ensure equal access. Where there are four or more toilet cubicles, at least one of them should be a designated disabled toilet cubicle.
