What is a Low Level Toilet

While there’s a standard height and dimension for toilet pans, we need to remember that there isn’t a standard height and dimension of our users. It’s true that we can’t cater perfectly for everyone, but careful consideration needs to be given to the users of your washrooms, in order to design and build toilet rooms with seamless usability in mind.

Low level toilets are a perfect case in point. The term low level toilet refers to the rim height of the toilet pan. While a standard toilet seat sits around 400mm from the floor, a low level toilet is likely to be as low as 300mm from the floor. This reduced height makes it easier for young users to use the toilet, encouraging good personal hygiene habits.

You’ll find low level toilets in nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups and primary schools. The big draw here is that they help nurture independence as children become more self sufficient in the bathroom.

Low level toilet dimensions

Low level toilet pan dimensions typical sit around 490mm deep from the back wall or cistern surface to the front of the toilet pan. 300-350mm high from the floor to toilet rim. And with a width 380-400mm.

Are the cisterns universal for low level toilets?

You can find close coupled low level toilets, where the cistern is exposed and mounted on the back of the toilet pan. Alternatively, if you choose a back to wall, or wall hung option, then they can be installed using a regular concealed toilet cistern which will be housed within the DUCT set.

High and low level toilets - the key differences

The main differences to bear in mind when considering low level toilets is the slightly smaller dimensions. While a regular toilet can be used by young users with a little help, low level toilets are incredibly difficult to use by fully grown adults. However, that doesn’t mean they are solely for the use in schools and early years settings. Many airports, leisure centers and shopping malls allocate one toilet cubicle to a low level toilet, and similarly offer one urinal set at a lower, more accessible height for young users too.
