Toilet Grab Rail FAQ

How to install grab bars

Bathroom grab rails help those with mobility issues, disabilities and the elderly use washroom facilities with ease. It is important that toilet grab bars are secure and properly attached to the wall so that it is safe for people to use for support; therefore, a professional should carry out the installation. Here is how a grab bar can be installed:

  1. Locate the best mounting location- you can use a stud finder for walls which are not tiled or walls that don't have to tile up to the ceiling to find the studs to screw the toilet grab rail to. If your wall is tiled up to the ceiling, a stud finder may not work (as they are typically covered by a cement board) so you should use the wall anchors supplied with your grab bar pack.

  2. Mark the screw locations - you can do this with a pencil or masking tape.

  3. Drill the pilot holes using an electric drill

  4. Insert the wall anchors and hammer them flush to the wall

  5. Mount the grab bar - insert the screws into the grab bar and tighten them using a screwdriver.

  6. Use silicone caulk for sealing - this will prevent any water from getting into the holes in the wall.

  7. Test the grab bar - once the bathroom grab rails are installed, make sure you pull on them with force to ensure that they are sturdy and securely fitted.

Who can install grab bars?

An experienced plumbing professional should install toilet grab bars to ensure that it is safe and secure for users. It is very important for grab bars to be installed correctly to avoid any accidents occurring.  Our team at Commercial Washrooms regularly install grab bars as part of the washroom refurbishment process.

What height should grab bars be installed?

ADA Standards recommend that horizontal grab bars are installed 33 to 36 inches above the floor. For toilets, there should be a grab bar sitting parallel to the ground and approximately 5 to 6 inches above the toilet seat and another should sit perpendicular to the end of the horizontal toilet grab rail.

What is the purpose of grab bars?

Grab bars such as toilet handrails are designed to support those with disabilities, and mobility issues as well as the elderly when using washroom facilities. A bathroom grab rail can give users more comfort, independence and confidence that they will be safe with the help of a sturdy bar to hold onto.

Where to place grab bars near the toilet

ADA guidelines suggest that toilet grab bars should be placed on the side of the wall closest to the toilet and there should also be a toilet grab rail on the wall behind the toilet to assist carers who are helping the person to sit and stand when using the washroom’s facilities.

Which toilet grab bars do I need?

When it comes to choosing the best toilet grab bars for your needs, consider the following:

  • Which length do you need? Consider how much available space you have and which will be appropriate for your users’ needs. Bathroom grab rails can be found in sizes ranging from 12 to 48 inches.

  • Which surface will be best? Toilet grab bars can have different textures which can provide better grip so try to think about which will be most comfortable for your users.

  • Which style/finish will suit your washroom? Here at Commercial Washrooms, we have toilet handrails available in stainless steel, plastic, chrome and aluminium as well as various colours so you can find a grab bar that fits in with your other furnishings.

What are the benefits of toilet handrails?

Toilet handrails are beneficial for commercial washrooms for the following reasons:
