Features & benefits of back-to-wall toilets

Because back-to-wall toilets are partnered with an IPS system and are more compact, the cubicle has reduced surface areas. This is because you have four flat wall surfaces and a small protruding toilet pan. This makes the washroom easier to clean, which is ideal for large sites such as schools, museums and universities. With fewer moving parts on display, they often need less maintenance compared to close-coupled toilets and conceal unsightly pipework.

FAQs

What is a back-to-wall toilet?

A back-to-wall toilet essentially means that the user’s back will sit flush against the wall when seated, as opposed to against a toilet cistern. When entering the cubicle, you’ll be presented with the toilet pan, but the cistern, which holds the water for flushing, will not be visible. This makes back-to-wall toilets ideal for conserving space more efficiently in toilet cubicles and more modern washrooms.

How do back-to-wall toilets work?

Back-to-wall toilet units are a style of toilet that is installed with the rear of the toilet pan against a service wall, or IPS duct panel, rather than with an external cistern. Back-to-wall toilets are instead combined with a concealed cistern that is installed behind the same service wall or duct panel. This type of installation means all supply and waste pipework is concealed from view, which makes back-to-wall toilets the choice for washrooms and bathrooms that are opting for a cleaner, more refined overall design.

Why choose a back-to-wall toilet pack?

A lot of people choose back-to-wall toilet packs because they can increase the available space inside the toilet cubicle, making the bathroom seem much bigger. However, sometimes it’s a move to prevent tampering or accidental damage. For example, when the cistern is exposed like on your traditional domestic toilet), users can remove or damage the moving parts. Moreover, our back-to-wall toilet products can also look very slick and smart, maintaining a simple design aesthetic throughout your wash space.

Where is the cistern on a back-to-wall toilet?

The cistern of a back-to-wall toilet is typically located behind the unit or wall. This conceals the cistern from view which creates a smart and seamless look.

What is the difference between close-coupled and back-to-wall toilets?

The two types of toilets differ in the following ways:

Details

Back-to-wall toilets

Close coupled toilets

Where they sit

Flush against the wall

May be against a wall or have a gap between the toilet unit and the wall

Location of the toilet cistern

Concealed by a back-to-wall unit or behind the wall itself

Visible and above the toilet pan

Location of the flush controls

Typically on a flush panel on the wall

On the top or the side of the cistern

Type of design

Contemporary

Traditional

  • Back-to-wall toilet units sit flush against a wall but there may be a gap between a close coupled toilet and the wall.

  • Back-to-wall toilet pans aren’t attached to the rest of the toilet (and you may need to purchase the cistern separately). On the other hand, the toilet pan and cistern come as a single unit with a close coupled toilet.

  • The flush panel is usually on the wall for back-to-wall toilets and either the top or side of a cistern for close coupled options.

  • Back-to-wall toilet packs are more contemporary, making them ideal for modern washrooms.

Do back-to-wall toilets save space?

Yes, whether you have a small bathroom and are conscious of the available space you have or your washroom has a minimalist style, back-to-wall toilets are a space-efficient option. This is because their cisterns are often concealed behind walls. Another space-efficient option for you to consider is wall-mounted toilets.

Things to bear in mind with back-to-wall toilets

Although back-to-wall toilets, such as the RAK Origin,  have no cistern on show, the water for flushing them has to come from somewhere. Most often, it is hidden within a false wall known as an IPS duct set. This conceals all the pipework and the cistern within. This creates what’s known as an integrated plumbing system (IPS). The panels, which conceal the cistern can be removed with a key or special tool, making maintenance simple, but protecting your washroom from vandalism and accidental damage.
