Spotlight On: Waste Disposal

Spotlight On: Waste Disposal

You’d think it was straightforward, choosing a bin for your washroom. But with so many options available it can take a little more of your decision-making time than you might think. Waste disposal can often be overlooked and needs to be carefully worked into your usable space. Be sure to consider how visitors will be using your washroom and take a look through this Spotlight focus on washroom waste disposal options.

Choosing a bin

A small bin in a busy washroom is going to need emptying frequently. If your washroom has hand dryers instead of paper towels, then waste will be somewhat reduced. When selecting a waste bin for your washroom, you need to consider a few key points.

1. How busy is your washroom?
2. What type of waste is likely to be generated?
3. What space do you have available for your waste disposal?

Below you'll find some of the waste bin options that are available and examples of where they may be best suited.

The free-standing bin

The bog-standard waste bin can be anything but. Instantly recognisable, these bins need ample space and are ideally situated next to paper towel dispensers and sinks. If you have a high traffic, heavy-volume washroom such as a motorway service station, then choosing one or more large waste bins can be advantageous. This allows for more waste to be collected and as such, needs emptying less frequently.

Wall mounted waste bins

Wall mounted waste bins can give the impression of a larger room, due to keeping the floor space clear. This style of waste bin has the added advantage of being fixed to the wall and so can’t be accidentally pushed over. For washrooms used by the general public, these prove very popular.

Counter mounted waste chutes

One of the most discreet waste disposal options is the counter mounted waste chute. Popular in hotels, restaurants and shopping centres, waste chutes are recessed into the counter of a vanity unit. Underneath the chute opening sits a hidden bin that can be accessed via a cupboard door or removable panel.

Recessed waste bins

For washrooms where space is tight, recessed, wall-mounted waste bins can be a great solution. These can either be recessed into a duct panelling system, or sunk into the wall or studwork. Not only does this help save on valuable space, but makes for a smooth clean finish.

Combination units

If you are going for a washroom design that has a minimalist feel or you’re looking to install as fewer fixtures as possible, then a combination waste unit may be of interest. These combine both paper towel dispenser and waste bin in one smart stainless steel unit. Recessed options are available as is a model that incorporates waste disposal, paper towel dispenser and hand dryer, much like the Bobrick Recessed 3 in 1 Combination Unit.

Sanitary waste bins

In unisex and female washrooms, sanitary waste bins will need to be implemented. These can be maintained by a contract clinical waste disposal firm and in some cases also supplied by them too. We offer a range of sanitary waste bins that fit seamlessly into contemporary style washrooms. There are recessed and wall mounted options as well as traditional free-standing units.
