Spoilt For Choice: Understanding Taps

Spoilt For Choice: Understanding Taps

There are a lot of decisions that need to be made when remodelling your washroom and if you are not armed with all the information, those decisions can prove troublesome. There’s a wide range of tap options available to you that vary not only in physical appearance and finish but in operation and function too. Here we take an overview of the main options available to you and the benefits they bring.

WALL MOUNTED TAPS

Wall mounted taps are fitted above the sink or wash trough, leaving your sink space clear. This type of tap is an excellent choice if you are mounting onto wall panelling, allowing you to have all the pipework hidden away, which not only makes for a cleaner, smarter look, but is resistant against vandalism.

NON CONCUSSIVE TAPS

A great option for unsupervised washrooms, non-concussive taps work by pushing the top, or front of a tap which then opens the flow of water for a limited amount of time. This function has two main benefits; saving water, as taps cannot be left running, and improving hygiene, as the user does not need to touch the tap after washing their hands clean.  These taps are available both wall mounted and sink/deck mounted.

SENSOR TAPS

Sensor taps are a very popular option and have similar, but improved benefits over non-concussive taps. The user never needs to physically touch the tap as it is operated when the users hands pass under the sensor, shutting off when hands are withdrawn. This naturally reduces the spread of bacteria and greatly improves both hygiene and water consumption in your washroom. Sensor taps are also incredibly user friendly for those with disabilities or impaired mobility. Both wall mounted and deck mounted options are available.

LEVER TAP

Lever taps are a common option for disabled and ambulant disabled toilet facilities as they are easy to use for those with impaired mobility.  As the name suggests, this type of tap has an extended lever that protrudes from the turning element of the tap. This gives extra leverage when opening and closing the tap, making them easy to use. Some options have extra long levers, which improves usability even further, allowing them to be operated with elbows or wrists. Most options for lever taps are sink, also known as deck-mounted, though there are some wall-mounted options available on the Commercial Washrooms site.

MIXER TAPS & THERMOSTATIC MIXER VALVES

When you have just one tap above your sink, where both hot and cold water comes through it, this is a mixer tap. Most sensor taps are mixer taps and there are mixer options available for lever taps too.  In some mixer taps, users have the ability to change the water's temperature themselves, other tap options are set to deliver water at a regulated, set temperature. In some cases, particularly when installing mixer taps, you may need to install a thermostatic mixing valve. This is a piece of kit that merges both hot and cold water feeds into one. This allows you to manage the blend the hot and cold water to deliver a temperature that won't scald users.
