How To Find A Leak In A Shower Cubicle

How To Find A Leak In A Shower Cubicle

Escaped water is one of the biggest concerns for anyone managing and maintaining washrooms in the commercial setting. When water starts to leak, the damage can quickly mount, leading to complex, time consuming and costly repairs. Repairing leaks in shower cubicles as soon as they are detected is key to ensuring the longevity of your washroom. Better yet, build routine checks and preventative measures into your maintenance schedule to help mitigate the chance of them occurring in the first place.

Signs you might have a leak in your shower

On closer inspection, you might find that there are signs that water is leaking in your shower. This could be anything from water running down a surface that is usually dry, swollen material like timber or MFC panels, blown tiles or vinyl flooring, or watermarks on the ceiling of a room below. This all highlights the importance of routine maintenance and weekly checks being made to the shower enclosures.

Common causes of shower leaks

The trouble with leaks in a shower cubicle is that there are many areas where they can occur. The first place to check is going to be the silicone seals around your commercial shower cubicle. Additionally, leaks can occur around the waste outlet, which can be removed and reset relatively simply.

In some instances, you might find that water is rising over the edge of the tray due to blocked or poor water flow in the waste outlet. Often, a blockage can be removed, which speeds up the removal of wastewater and prevents water build-up over ridges and seals.

There are some rare occasions when leaks will occur on the pipework. Checks to seals within the controls is a sensible place to start, as well as the showerhead itself as these can be replaced or repaired very easily. In most commercial settings, you will be able to gain access to the DUCT set behind the shower, revealing all the mains water feeds. This enables complete inspection and repair should the need arise.

Preventing leaks in commercial shower spaces

Of course, prevention is preferable to repair and there are several steps you can take to ensure your commercial shower cubicles remain watertight. Investing in the best materials possible to start with can go a long way to prevent leaks and the damage they can cause. Solid grade laminate (SGL) is the preferred choice in commercial settings as the panels are completely impervious to water, so will never swell or weaken. Seals should be inspected regularly on both the wall joins and anywhere there is a join to the floor or tray. Any dripping shower heads should also be inspected and deep cleaned to remove the build-up of limescale and to inspect the rubber seals.
