Kirkham Community Centre Changing Places Refurbishment Case Study

Kirkham Community Centre hosts conferences, training sessions, parties, and other events. The main hall accommodates 250 people, and the function room accommodates 150 people, so the Toilets are a high-traffic area.

Kirkham Community Centre is a Wheelchair and disabled-friendly destination. The committee wanted to further improve the facilities by installing a Changing Places room. An existing area had been extended to meet the Changing Places Requirements (12 Sq Meters), and Commercial Washrooms was approached to supply the necessary products for a complete Changing Places room.

Changing Places have a minimum specification—in addition to fitting in the extra items in a Changing Places washroom, we also need to give enough space for carers to navigate the room, manoeuvre, and organise everything effectively. We were happy to guide the specification to meet the stringent Changing Places guidance.

Changing Places is a nationally recognised toilet and changing room movement aiming to improve disabled facilities in public areas. These washrooms go beyond what you might think when someone mentions a disabled toilet.

A standard disabled toilet doesn’t accommodate everyone. Some people have limited mobility and need extra equipment to access the toilet or change their continence pads.

Changing Places provides the necessary equipment for carers to change children and adults with specific disabilities that would otherwise see users unable to venture away from home.
