The Junction Sports Centre in Broadstone, Dorset is a family sports and fitness centre with a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and kids' soft play area that has been managed by the Bournemouth YMCA since 2009.
Unfortunately, the sports centre had suffered a small fire with smoke damage that was localised to the male gym changing room, sauna area, and shower cubicles. This area also contained a locker room and toilet facilities and the client’s primary requirement was for the damaged facilities to be reinstated to a higher specification than the old facilities.
Client Brief & Requirements
The client’s initial brief was simple in terms of the functionality that they wished to achieve from the space. They opted to commission Commercial Washrooms to carry out a full washroom design service so as to ensure the concept and the quality of the install, chosen fixtures, fittings, and washroom accessories were of the desired standard. At the same time, serious consideration was given to the changing room layout and colour regime.
Commercial Washrooms developed a ‘red and grey’ design concept for the changing room refurbishment, which are the sports centre’s corporate colours as presented on their most recent marketing material. This concept was presented in 2D CAD drawings and 3D computer rendered design concepts.
Washroom Design Visuals
3D computer washroom designs are unrivalled in assisting clients to clearly visualise how the chosen colours, fixtures, fittings and design will combine as a concept and Commercial Washrooms are the pioneers of this service within the industry as part of our full washroom design service.
The 2D CAD drawings demonstrated clearly the use of space envisaged by Commercial Washrooms and how the available area would be optimised. Particularly useful considering the space had to house a changing room with lockers, shower cubicles, toilet cubicles, urinals, sauna, and steam room.
Commercial Washrooms were contracted to complete the design on the basis of these comprehensive drafts and set about work with Lan Services Ltd (the fitting team) finalising plans and the program of works for the changing room refurbishment to be completed before the busy summer peak season.
Unique & Exclusive Design Features
The final result as evidenced in the photos was finished to an exemplary standard complimented by the quality of the chosen washroom furniture, including cubicles and sanitary ware.
The colours throughout the changing room. Into the shower cubicle area and toilet facilities are in keeping with the corporate style in the initial 3D design concepts. While the steam room and sauna area were left with its natural timber appearance for aesthetics.
Changing Room Refurbishment
Unique touches included the red solid surface changing room bench, which was a custom design and manufactured exclusively for the Junction changing room refurbishment project. The bench compliments the design of the room beautifully and provides a functional seating space while users change.
Z lockers installed in the changing room give space for users to put their bag in the locker and hang clothes up, without needing to fold and crease them. Ideal for those who visit the gym on the way to or from work as many of the Junctions users do.
Shower & Toilet Area Refurbishment
Solid grade laminate (SGL) toilet cubicle panels, vanity units, and shower cubicles were specified as the material is impervious to water. Of course, as this is still a project for a public gym, SGL panels are the most resistant to damage to all cubicle materials too.
Each of the shower cubicles features a generous changing area within the cubicle in front of the showering area. With the shower area featuring a glass bi-fold partition door, luxurious chrome shower fittings, and large rain shower style head.
Conclusion
With the Junction sports centre in Broadstone being just a stones’ throw from the Commercial Washrooms head office the product sourcing, washroom equipment sales, and administration staff all had the unique opportunity to visit the project site at various stages of the washroom refurbishment project. Giving our staff greater insight and knowledge for when they specify future projects for clients.
The unique finishes and touches applied to this project made it an interesting project to work on for all involved, our only concern now is that as our changing room refurbishment was limited to the damaged men’s locker room that the ladies at the gym will want their changing room refurbished next.
