Our continued working relationship with Hampton School saw us undertake the renovation of a changing and shower room used by pupils, staff and alumni. As well as being a facility used by current students, a social group known as the Old Hamptonians use the space for sports such as rugby, football and cricket.
The space was in need of significant work in order to allow us to carry out the new install. After stripping back the existing fixtures, a new floor gulley was dug into the floor for the showering area. Following this, we prepared the floor with latex to give us a smooth sound surface for an Altro anti-slip safety vinyl floor covering. The walls, which were bare block work, were also plastered to give the best longevity and finish to the Altro Whiterock wall cladding that was fitted.
This changing and shower space will see a lot of traffic and being a humid, wet and often dirty environment it needed substantial durability credentials. Altro Aquarius was selected for the floor covering as it offers rugged protection against sports shoes, while simultaneously delivering anti-slip properties for bare feet post shower. We applied marine joints to the Altro Whiterock while making sure the wall cladding overlapped the vinyl flooring riser that laps up the wall. This creates a surface that can be hosed down and deep-cleaned easily with no risk of water penetration at the seals.
Historically, the room had suffered from damp so we fitted two large air handling systems to manage the humidity and moisture levels. A new suspended ceiling was also installed, housing LED lighting on a PIR system. This meant that the lights are activated by a sensor only when users are actually in the room.
The school was keen to have two private showering cubicles, as well as the large format communal shower space. These cubicles were made from solid grade laminate, a waterproof material that’s completely impervious to water. Stainless steel fixings and hardware were used throughout this project to prevent any issues with rust in the future.
Bristan shower panels were employed that featured integral thermostatic mixer valves. These units allow for easy maintenance, but also give the user full control over shower temperature. The shower drainage was completed with Aco floor gullies designed to accept vinyl flooring. The Altro Aquarius is then welded into the edge of the gulley, delivering a reliable water-tight seal.
The school colours of yellow and black were brought into the room, featuring on both SGL changing benches, and 12 sets of four-tier lockers. These hard-wearing lockers are incredibly durable, built from a metal carcass and solid grade laminate doors.
This project was completed on time and on budget post lockdown in 2020, adhering to all regulations rules and protocols. The timely completion of this changing and shower room enabled Hampton School to get ahead of the imminent sports season and the new academic year.
