We were approached by Brittany Ferries to provide the specification and refurbishment of their busy commercial driver washrooms at their port in Poole, Dorset. Both male and female washrooms were tired and in need of modernisation and would be the first washrooms to be renovated in a phase of on-going works.
Out With The Old
The new washrooms needed to be robust to withstand high traffic, yet still feel modern and fresh. With an emphasis on easy clean features and strong durability, we provided Brittany Ferries with a full specification and CAD drawings before any works physically took place.
After removing all existing tiles, flooring, and facilities, we began rebuilding the interior of the shower and toilet facilities. In place of the tiles, which carry grout lines that are difficult to keep clean, we installed Altro Whiterock on the walls. This is a highly durable and hygienic material that is simple to wipe down and sanitise. Panels were thermoformed and connected with H-section joints, to prevent bacteria build-up. In the shower area, we actually welded the joints so that they were even easier to keep clean.
Underfoot, we used Altro Walkway, while in the shower areas we used Altro Pisces, which carries barefoot anti-slip properties for increased safety.
Waste Not, Want Not
A new suspended ceiling was installed that housed new ventilation and a PIR LED lighting system. This means that the lights are activated only when someone is actually in the room, delivering huge energy savings.
We fitted a waterproof, solid surface bench in the shower space for changing, and Delabie Sporting shower panels. These shower units are non-concussive and when activated only emit water for a set period of time. This removes the risk of them being accidentally left on but also reduces the time visitors use them, which has a positive impact on water usage and sewage costs. As part of this job, we also had to dig out new gulleys for the showers so that they could accommodate the flooring properly. This resulted in a completely watertight seal and ensured the longevity of the new washroom.
Standing The Test Of Time
Solid grade laminate was used for toilet cubicles and duct sets, a material completely impervious to water so it will never swell or weaken from damp, moisture, or ingress water. Vitro S20 toilet pans were installed for their heavy-duty robustness, while DVS sensor flush kits were fitted with the urinals to alleviate maintenance issues and reduce water usage in the facilities. Sensor activation also significantly improves hygiene in the wash space.
At the washbasins, we supplied Bristan sensor taps, and Franke SD80 counter mounted soap dispensers. This means that one large-format soap container hidden beneath the counter can supply several dispensers, making refills and maintenance fast and efficient.
In the ladies' washroom, we fitted a Corian vanity top with inset basins, while in the mens, we installed a solid surface wash trough in a custom colour to complement the interior of the washroom.
All works, removals, and deliveries were carried out in the working port on budget and on time and have left Brittany Ferries with a highly durable, efficient and easy to clean wash and shower facilities for their commercial drivers using their services.
